How To Buy A Designer Evening Gown
You’ve been invited to the company awards dinner. It’s a black tie and designer evening gown affair. You want the perfect gown. Before you go out and purchase the first one you fall in love with, there are a few things you should remember.
1. Don’t expect a perfect fit for every dress. Most dresses off the rack are not made for a specific person. If the dress fits your body, it will look much better. Figure out the style and cut you like then have it fitted or altered for your body by a talented seamstress or tailor.
2. Don’t try on too many evening gowns. If you have too many options, you are more likely to have a hard time making a decision. Know what you want before you try on any dress. Ask to see only those particular styles and color choices you are interested in. This will save you time, frustrations from being overwhelmed and possibly even money.
3. Start looking early, as soon as you know the occasion. Don’t wait too late or selection of styles may be limited. If the dress must be ordered and shipped, it could take several months.
4. With so many places offering evening gowns, you’ll need to decide where you are going to shop. It will most likely be based on the amount you want to spend. There are chain stores, small boutiques, resale shops and custom sewing as well as online shopping. Just beware of shopping online, as you can’t try the gown on before purchasing.
5. Bring along photos of your ideal gown. Take along a camera to take photos of the dresses you love the most since you may be visiting several stores and trying on many evening dresses. Bring along a trusted friend for their opinions. You might also bring along the shoes you’ll be wearing if you’ve already purchased them and any jewelry you will be wearing.
6. Look at your options on lengths, sleeve styles, the neckline and waistline. Research on what types of fabrics work with the different styles and with your body type. Have in mind the length you want. Do you want a short cocktail gown or a long evening dress? Look at the styles in your preferred length. Remember, many gowns can be ordered in the color of your choice if you find one you love but it’s the wrong color.
7. Don’t let the salesperson talk you into anything. They often work on commission and unfortunately, many won’t care how the dress looks on you, especially if it’s the most expensive dress.
8. Don’t become discouraged if you don’t find the perfect evening gown on your first try. Don’t make a rash decision just because you didn’t find the perfect gown. Continue searching until you find one that you love.
9. Shop around even if you have found your dress. You can compare prices before making the final purchase. One way to save a bundle, if you don’t mind wearing a dress that’s been previously worn, purchase the same dress online or at a resale shop.
10. Most of all, have fun. You want to find the perfect dress that fits you and will make you feel special at the company party, but don’t stress over it.
